week of Janurary 25th

Last week was such an exciting (short) week!
Your second graders did such a wonderful job with their Famous American presentations. I was blown away by their readiness and their knowledge!
Be proud of your child!

And a little indoor recess fun!

It's hard to believe that Country Reports are around the corner. The children were assigned to turn in their top three country choices by today. After sorting through them, I will send home a note stating which country was selected, and a copy of the rubric for the report. I will also send home a poster if you have requested one. Please keep and refer to the rubric for my expectations. Also, keep in mind that this report allows for much more freedom and creativity as far as displaying the knowledge learned. Have fun with it, and please let me know if you have any questions.

Because of our short week last week, and National Lutheran Schools Week happening this week, we might be playing a little catch up with some of our subjects...

RELIGION
In religion, we will be following an on-line mission trip to Guatemala brought to us by Lutheran Hour Ministries for National Lutheran School Week. We will watch videos and sort through some discussion questions that enrich each daily session. On Wednesday this week, second grade gets to wear the color yellow. Each grade will be wearing a color that corresponds to the GOSPEL colors we have been studying all year.  Our memory work will reflect the "yellow verse"...
Memory Work
(Jesus said), I am going to prepare a place for you... I will come back and take you with Me that you also may be where I am. John 14:2-3

SPELLING AND GRAMMAR
This week in spelling students will spell more words with r-controlled spelling patterns (r-controlled vowels - er, ir, ur). In grammar we will be reviewing linking verbs and helping verbs.

WRITING
Students will continue working on their nonfiction books. Each section of their book has a heading and a paragraph that contains a main idea with supporting details. This week we hope to add an introduction and a few photos with captions. We plan on publishing these books quite soon!

SOCIAL STUDIES
Because we did not get to it last week, this week we will tap into a brief study of African American History. We will read about and discuss several Famous African Americans and study their contributions to our country.
