Week of March 29th

He is Risen!
He is Risen indeed!
Alleluia!
Happy Easter! I hope you all had a chance to celebrate the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ! As your second graders learned... it's not about the bunny, it's about how Jesus died for our sins so that we can be saved. We are so blessed.

Here's a picture of Mrs. Leet reading after our Good Friday service. What an excellent story... The Three Trees. Ask your second grader about the meaning behind this book!

Market Day was a HUGE success!
The students really enjoyed being producers and consumers during this project. They truly put all of their economic skills to use and learned a lot about business.
Here's a look back...

Although this week is short, we are "back to normal." Here we go!

RELIGION
This week we will discuss the fact that sometimes good news is hard to believe. The women coming to the tomb on Easter morning received a message that was hard to believe, and Thomas (one of Jesus disciples) could not believe that Jesus had actually risen from the dead. Christ's resurrection confirmed His work of salvation. Through it we learn many TRUTHS. We learn that Jesus is the Son of God, that God keeps His promises, and that we too will rise and live eternally someday. Never doubt God's truth!
MEMORY WORK
Students will be saying the verse this week. There will be no written option.
Jesus said, "Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed." John 20:29

SPELLING and GRAMMAR
Our spelling words this week have the "schwa" spelling patterns. Schwa is the most common vowel sound in the English language, but it is also the cause of more spelling mistakes than any other sound. Schwa is an unaccented vowel sound. Vowels saying schwa are "lazy vowels" and can often sound like their is no vowel there at all.
LIST ONE
alike

comma

LIST TWO

BONUS - biomes

In grammar we will continue to work on pronouns, focusing on possessive pronouns and plural possessive pronouns.

WRITING
This week we are kicking off a new writing genre - Poetry! We will discuss what poetry is, and practice writing our own descriptive poems. Your second graders are going to be such great poets!

SCIENCE
What are biomes? Biomes are ecosystems where plants, animals, and people live together in a certain climate. This week your children will be researching various biomes and making discoveries about where each biome is located, what each biome looks like, the various climates they have, what animals live in each biome, and what's important about each biome. In the final stages of this project, students will be creating "box biomes." We will be in need of boxes (ex-large shoebox sized) for this project. If anyone has boxes that they can donate please shoot me an e-mail! Thanks!

Week of March 21st

Welcome back from Spring Break!
I hope you all had a wonderful opportunity to take a breather from school routines and rejuvenate for the last few months of school! My family and I enjoyed the beautiful weather God gave us (early in the week) with lots of fun St. Louis entertainment, along with some much needed relaxation. Now, we are ready for school again!!

This week is a short week with a lot going on! Because it's an "assessment week" in reading there will be no spelling! Please be sure to give your second grader a tissue when you let them know this sad news. We will also not have memory work this week (so maybe two tissues). As the days this week guide us to Easter Sunday, during our usual religion class we will continue discussing the events that lead up to Jesus dying on the cross. We will read the stories in depth and identify times we sin and praise Jesus for His courage and strength so that we can joyfully receive His forgiveness.
There will be a Maundy Thursday chapel service on Thursday morning and a Good Friday chapel service on Thursday afternoon (after Market Day).

Here's a look back at some of the things we did before break.
Acting out when Jesus washed his disciples feet...
What is bartering?
Students practiced bartering for things they needed...

 Making study guides with partners...
Everyone did really well on the economics test!
Be proud of your second graders knowledge!

The big event his week will be Market Day.
Before break your child chose a good to make or a service to provide for our 2nd grade Market Day event. This event will allow the children to put into practice what they learned while studying economics. On Thursday the "shops" will open and the kiddos will have a chance to shop with the play money they have been earning at school.
Please let me know if you have any questions about Market Day!

Week of March 7th

Happy 4th quarter!
Can you believe that we only have ONE quarter of the school year left?! It's been an amazing ride so far, and I'm excited for the the weeks yet to come! Here's a look back at last week. There was a lot of learning going on!
Acting out Palm Sunday...

Although the QR codes didn't work so well, the children
really had to think hard during this contraction activity...

 Persuasive Writing introduction...
It's called "Making Thinking Visual" with
a "Tug of War"

Then, we learned how to write persuasive paragraphs
with "OREO writing"...

Did you know Dr. Seuss had a birthday last week?
Your children read his books all week...

And we even wrote persuasive writing pieces
on whether or not to eat green eggs???
It actually turned into TWO debates...
Ask your second grader if they liked the eggs with artificial food dye
or the green spinach (Or neither!).
Come check out the hallway if you'd like to read everyone's opinion!

The kiddos were SO excited to "get paid," but
they were NOT excited to be taxed!
The economics unit is going really well. Be on the lookout for a note coming home about the "market day" that we will have after spring break. This project will give the students a chance to purchase goods or services with their income.

RELIGION
WOW!! I knew we could do it! You all blew my mind again, bringing in $141.56 for Tilda, our sponsor Uganda child!!! That is amazing!!! Way to finish strong! In total we raised more than enough to cover costs for her schooling!! (Our grand total was roughly $340!) Thank you second graders for working hard to earn change for this collection, and thank you families for supporting this amazing cause so dear to our school.

The word garden usually conjures up images of a beautiful outdoor area full of life. When we think of the Garden of Eden we see a perfect paradise. Fast forward a few thousand years and you again find the Lord walking through a Garden, but there was nothing spectacular about the Garden of Gethsemane. Yet, it was there that Jesus Christ began His final plunge into the depths of agony in order to take away our sins. This week we will grow in our understanding of the enormous task that Jesus faced and completed, carrying the sins of the world.

MEMORY WORK
If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9

SPELLING AND GRAMMAR
This week students will spell words with oi and oy spelling sound patterns. In grammar we will explore more with pronouns.

LIST TWO

WRITING
I'm sure this is no surprise, but you children have become quite the expert persuasive writers. This week we will finish up a few paragraphs on a few different topics using what they know about the writing process.

SOCIAL STUDIES
We will continue our study of economics this week focusing on the choices people make related to earning, spending and saving money. We will also discuss trade and how it relates to our economy. Keep your eyes peeled for a note coming home explaining the "market day" we will have after spring break. For Market Day, your second graders will be deciding on a good to sell or a service to provide. They will use the money they have been earning in class to act as consumers in the market.

TEST will be this Friday, March 11th
