Week of January 11th

Well it sure felt good to get back into normal routines last week. I hope you all had a great weekend and feel refreshed for another week full of adventures.

Please make sure your child is working diligently on his or her Famous American report. Even if your child is finished with the poster, please keep the posters at home until the scheduled presentation date. Students will be graded on how they present, so it might be a good idea to practice a few times before the assigned time.
The presentation schedule is as follows:

Students numbered 1 through 4 - Tuesday, January 19th
Students numbered 5 through 9 - Wednesday, January 20th
Students numbered 10 through 13 - Thursday, January 21st
Students numbered 14 through 17 - Friday, January 22nd

I'm so excited to see these finished products!
Thanks for being such a great partner with your child's education!
By the way... Country Reports are next, so start brainstorming with your child about a few different countries about which he or she would like to learn.

Here's just a few pictures of last week...
We learned a lot about the Human Body, with digestion being one of the most popular. Here the kiddos are using a zip-lock baggie, water, and a saltine cracker to model digestion.

Students are also in the primary stages of writing their Nonfiction books.
They are loving it!

RELIGION
This week in religion we will read about the time when Jesus began to let people know more about why He came to Earth. Students will learn about how there were people who had studied God's word, and were waiting eagerly to meet Jesus. As Jesus called His disciples, He taught them and wanted them to tell others that He came to be our Savior. Take some time to talk with your child about how your family can be disciples... What does God want us to do with this Good News?

MEMORY WORK
The Son of God appeared to take away sins, and in Him there is no sin. 1 John 3:5

SPELLING AND GRAMMAR
In spelling this week students will spell words with scr, str, and spr spelling patterns. In grammar, we will review how to combine sentences using the word 'and'. If two sentences have words that are the same, you can combine the sentences. We will also review the use of appropriate punctuation at the end of sentences.

List One and List Two only have two different words this week.
List One

screen
scream
scrape
struck
strict
sprain
spruce
strap
stripe
spring

List Two

WRITING
Your children are such great writers! Last week they really enjoyed brainstorming and organizing their nonfiction writing pieces. This week, students will work on writing paragraphs from their brainstorming. The focus will be a paragraph with a main idea and supporting details. As we explore nonfiction, they will also work on an introduction, a table of contents, and a few photos with captions or labels. Get ready, these kids sure know a lot of facts!

SCIENCE
As we study the human body, your children are really starting to understand more about keeping their bodies healthy and strong. Studying the human body also intrigues many second graders because it allows them to think about what goes on under their skin. We will continue to explore functions of the organs in our bodies and how each part of the body works together to keep us alive. Keep your eye out for extra science homework this week. There will also be a test on Friday.
