Week of April 23th

Ready for another week?
Achievement Tests are DONE! Be proud of your second grader!
Everyone worked very hard, did their best, and we're happy to be finished.

Did you hear about our special "Mystery Reader?"
LCDR Klug came to thank everyone for their prayers, read a story and share some special Japanese treats. Ask your second grader if he/she has a new favorite Kit Kat flavor!

There sure is a lot going on in these last five weeks until SUMMER!!
This Thursday we have Grandparent's or Special Friend's Day... Please ask if you have any questions, or consider letting us know if your child will not have a special friend so that maybe we can work something out. The operetta is also on Thursday. Your child can be dropped off in our classroom at 6:45. It's going to be a great show!

Here are our learning goals and objectives for the week...

CHRISTIAN CHARACTER FORMATION PROJECT
This week we will read about how Paul and his team understood their responsibility to the people of Macedonia from Acts 16:6-15. The virtue we will revisit through this Bible passage is Respect. We define RESPECT as God’s power for you to honor Him and others. As we read and discuss, we will ask ourselves this “Big Question”: How can you recognize the people God wants you to help?

PHONICS and SPELLING
This week we will read, sort and spell words with the or, ore, and oar spelling sounds and patterns.

READING SKILLS and STRATEGIES
This week we will review how "reading is thinking" as we read various poems and discuss their meaning.

GRAMMAR and WRITING
Sometimes writing poetry can be challenging, but these kiddos are up for the challenge. As we continue to use strategies real poets use to write poems, we will also start making decisions that strengthen the meaning of our poems.

It's been fun to watch the children notice how some "grammar rules" can be be broken with poetry, but they will continue to work on using everything they know to make their sentences or phrases look and sound right.
