Last week was so much fun!
Your second graders were so excited to read with
their preschool reading buddies!
We taught each other grammar skills...
Learned about forces and motion,
and magnets through centers...
And now...
For another great week!
RELIGION
As we studied the 10 commandments last week, we ended up taking a break from reading about the Israelites and focused more on how the 10 commandments related to our lives today. This week we will draw our attention to the next three commandments. Your children are putting together a book of each commandment to help them apply meaning.
MEMORY WORK
We will continue with commandment four, five, and six. Again, I will give
the option for the children to write their memory work with a
"fill in the blank" paper, or simply say it, whichever fits their
learning best.
4. Honor your father and your mother.
5. You shall not murder.
6. You shall not commit adultery.SPELLING
In spelling we will review the "short u" and "long u" sounds. For "long u," we will focus on the o/consonant/silent e rule, as you notice in the spelling words.
This week we will also begin testing with two lists. List one will always be the on-level spelling words from our curriculum. List two is called the beyond-level list, also from the curriculum. Some of you may feel that your child is ready for a few more challenging words. If your family decides that your child can spell every word from list one, it can be your family's choice that your child be tested on list two. The homework and the classwork will always be with the list one words, so please be sure that you have a conversation with your child about this before Thursday's test.
This week there are only three different words on each list.

GRAMMAR
Students will learn to identity nouns this week. As they investigate, they will determine that a noun is a word that names a person, place, or thing. Your second grader will also learn to use commas to separate three or more words in a sentence. They sure know a lot about commas!
SCIENCE
As we wrap up our study of forces and motion, this week we will be working on a study guide in class. The TEST WILL BE ON THURSDAY. I will be sending home science homework on Monday. The homework will be due on Wednesday. Your child will be encouraged to take his or her science book home every night this week to help with the homework, or simply to read and study. However, the book will need to be brought back to school every morning so that we can use it in class as well.
SOCIAL STUDIES
This week is fire safely week! We are so excited to learn more about fire safety and hear from a special guest. Stay tuned for pictures.
