Your Second Graders had many
incredible experiences last week.
One was the wonderful opportunity
of meeting Tracy Schlepphorst.
She read one of her published stories and
talked to the kiddos about what it takes to be an author.
We were so captivated!
Another special guest was one of our local fireman
(and second grade dad's).
He talked to us about fire safety!
We were also visited by a high school robotics club.
The high schoolers let us explore the "robots" they created.
They said it all started when they learned about simple machines!
Other sharing in the classroom with each other was just as special.
We plan to continue our study of The 10 Commandments. Hopefully this is generating good conversation between you and your child at home as you discuss the deeper meanings of these commandments while your children study them for their memory work. This week I challenge you to discuss things like gossip, wasting time, and desires for new things as we study at school as well. Having meaning for the commandments will also help with memorizing them.
MEMORY
Again, your child will have the option to write their memory work with a "fill in the blank" paper, or simply say it, whichever fits their learning best.
7. You shall not steal
8. You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
9. You shall not covet your neighbor's house.
SPELLING
This week students will spell words with consonant blends (initial and final). Please do not forget to have a discussion with your child about which list he/she will study for the test.

GRAMMAR
In grammar we will learn about plural nouns. Students will identify when to use s, es, or ies when making a plural noun. We will also review the proper way to write a letter. The children will focus on using commas after the greeting and closing.
WRITING
I'm very excited to work on a new writing genre this week! Students will be brainstorming and exploring a "how-to" writing piece. They will learn to inform to the reader how to do something or make something. Stay tuned for details on our "teach it" day.
SOCIAL STUDIES
Our new unit in social studies introduces the children to the concept of government. We will discuss what it means to be a good citizen, the difference between laws and rules, and our three different levels of government - local, state, and federal.
