Week of November 28th

Welcome back! I hope you all had a wonderful time relaxing and enjoying family time. Can you believe that Christmas break is less than three and a half weeks away? This year is going by very quickly. I'm so proud of all the learning happening with your children! Thanks so much for sharing them with me every day!

Here's what's in store for the week...

CHRISTIAN CHARACTER FORMATION PROJECT
As we wrap up our study on Moses this week, we will read about the crossing of the Red Sea and explore the virtue of courage. Courage is God's power for you to overcome fear. God kept His promise to the Israelites even as they faced danger and troubled times. This reminds us that we too need to trust in our all-powerful God to guide us through difficult times - and to have courage! Ask yourselves how can God's mighty acts of power help you stay strong even when you can't see how to get across?

READING SKILLS and STRATEGIES
This week as students monitor their comprehension they will learn to identify various cause and effect scenarios in their reading. We will talk about WHAT happens in their stories, and WHY those things happen...

SPELLING, PHONICS and GRAMMAR
In spelling this week we will spell and identify words with "long e" patterns. Please review what "long e" spelling pattern is being used for each word and practice using the words in a sentence. In grammar we will be identifying action verbs. Students will learn that action verbs tell what someone or something is doing.

LIST ONE

LIST TWO

WRITING
Our next unit of study in writing is nonfiction. This week students will learn how to independently plan and write nonfiction books. They will explore published nonfiction books, brainstorm, practice writing strong introductions and organize their writing. I can't wait to see what they can do!

Week of November 21st

Happy Thanksgiving!
Two more days of school and then it's time for a well deserved break. It's time to celebrate all the amazing blessings God has given us! We have so much for which to be thankful!
As the days lead up to Thanksgiving, I encourage you and your second grader to take some time every day to say a prayer of thanksgiving. By focusing on the reasons you and your kids have to be grateful, you can use everyday moments to make gratitude and thankfulness a part of your family’s daily life.

Today and tomorrow the kids will take their Unit 2 Reading Test and we will finish up our Magic Tree House book study on Pilgrims. Hooray for no homework!!

If you'd like to hear the thanksgiving paragraphs your children wrote, come check out our hallway and scan their QR code!

Thank you Heavenly Father for blessing me with the opportunity to teach all of these beautiful children at CCLS.  I am grateful for the fact that you have connected each of our lives in ways that honor you and show how much you love each of us.
Thank you for the love you provide to us through one another.
And, we praise you Lord for all you have sacrificed for us through your Son, Jesus Christ. You made the ultimate sacrifice for our sins. We are grateful for your forgiveness when we sin. Lord, let us never forget how much we owe to you, and let us always be humble before you.
Thank you for providing and protecting.
In Your holy name, Amen.

Week of November 14th

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. I was thrilled to be able to meet Mrs. Leet's new grand-babies. They are adorable, beautiful miracles.... and her daughter, (my life-long friend) is also doing well. I couldn't be happier for Mrs. Leet and her family!!

Thanks for all of your quick returns on the last minute "paperwork" items last week! I apologize for sending things home late.
If you would still like to order a class book, I can accept payments until tomorrow. If you ordered online, I still need the form back. I have to mail our package on Tuesday so that we reach our publishing date.

Also, thanks for sending back the Veteran's Day stars. The kids really enjoyed learning about Veteran's Day and honoring your friends and family in the military. If you still have stars at home that you'd like to add to our wall, please send them in anytime this week. I told the kiddos that they did not need a picture of their Veteran, so don't go out of your way for that. Thanks to all of our Veteran's...

Here are all of the goals and objectives for next week

CHRISTIAN CHARACTER FORMATION PROJECT

Just as the Lord saw the blood of the lamb on the doorposts of the Hebrews in Egypt and spared them from the plague that killed Egypt’s firstborn, so God the Father sees us washed with the blood of the lamb and spares us from the wages of our sins. This week we will study the Passover and discuss Justice. Justice is God’s power for you to do the right thing. While talking about this with your child this week, ask yourselves this question, “How can you escape from sin and be protected from the judgment that results from it?”

READING SKILLS and STRATEGIES
This week we will continue to learn and practice inferences. When your child infers, the use what they already know (their schema) plus the words and pictures from the text to draw conclusions. This is a challenging skill. It requires students to really think about answers that aren't just in the book. Practice asking questions that require inference with your child at home!

We will also be reading and researching about Pilgrims with a whole class "book club." The book is a Magic Treehouse Pilgrim Research Guide. Your kids are going to love learning so many interesting facts about Pilgrims while using all of their reading skills and strategies!

PHONICS and SPELLING
Your second graders will work on identifying and blending words with long o spelling patterns (ow, oe, oa, o).
LIST ONE
mow
crow
toast
soap
foam
most
grow
toe
goes
told

LIST TWO
mow
crow
toast
soap
foam
most
woe
stow
moan

BONUS - Pilgrim

GRAMMAR and WRITING
As we study about pilgrims this week, students will do a lot of writing as a response to reading. They'll be comparing and contrasting themselves to what life was like for the pilgrims and using what they know about grammar as they write.

Week of November 7th

Last week was a great week.
Thanks to those of you that were able to join us on our field trip.
The kiddos seemed to enjoy the beautiful music at the symphony.
It was a great experience.

We also enjoyed reading buddy time with our preschool reading buddies.
Your second graders take this time very seriously.
They practiced reading "just right books" with fluency before they came...

And then we were ready!

Here's what's in store for this week...

CHRISTIAN CHARACTER FORMATION PROJECT

The struggle between good and evil will exist as long as the earth exists… until God puts Satan in his place.  This week we will explore this struggle by researching about Moses and the 10 plagues. Just as the plagues in Egypt displayed God's authority, Jesus directly addressed the needs of His people through His own miracles, and helped bring deliverance through them. We will study the virtue of RESPECT. Respect is God’s power for you to honor Him and others. As you discuss all of this with your child have conversations about this big question… “How can you choose to respect God and others even when you’re plagued by trails?"

READING SKILL OF THE WEEK
As we continue to investigate good reading habits, this week we will explore how good readers ask themselves questions and make inferences as they read.

PHONICS and SPELLING
This week we will work on spelling words with long i spelling patterns. (i, igh, ie, y). Students will practice identifying rhymes and blending words with these patterns.

LIST ONE
light
sight
high
try
lie

LIST TWO

GRAMMAR and WRITING
Your kiddos are working really hard to publish paragraphs about things for which they are thankful... We are going to send their published pages off to an official publishing company to have a legitimate printed class book. Stay tuned on information about how to order your own book. I'm noticing that they are all applying so much of what they are learning in their writing. This week our grammar focus is using an apostrophe for possessive nouns.
