Week of April 29th

Last week sure was an exciting week...

Only FOUR more weeks left until summer!
Here's what's in store this week...

CHRISTIAN CHARACTER FORMATION PROJECT
This week’s Christian Character story comes from the books of Luke and Acts, where we will learn more about Jesus Ascension. The virtue we'll study is courage. We define COURAGE as God’s power for you to overcome fear. The “Big Question" this week is - How does Christ's position in Heaven give you courage to go boldly before God as we wait for His answers?

PHONICS and SPELLING
This week we will read, sort and spell words with the ire, ier, and ure spelling sounds and patterns.

READING SKILLS and STRATEGIES
As the year comes to an end, I will begin "benchmark testing" again. This “test” provides teachers with a reliable resource to accurately identify each child’s instructional and independent reading levels and document their progress through one-on-one assessments. Having an end of the year benchmark will provide third grade teachers with a great knowledge of where to begin instruction next year. Each second grader has made tremendous progress this year. Be proud!

GRAMMAR and WRITING
We will be sending an invitation for our Author Celebration this week. Please RSVP as soon as possible. We would like for each child to have someone special join us for this extraordinary event. It will be after chapel, in classrooms B&C on the church side of campus. Your children are excited to share all their written work with you! We have a variety of genres to reveal; they've worked really hard this year!

Week of April 23rd

HE IS RISEN!
HE IS RISEN INDEED!
ALLELUIA!
Happy Easter! I hope you all enjoyed a happy and healthy Easter break.
My family and I had a wonderful time celebrating our Risen Savior.

Here's what's in store for this short week.

CHRISTIAN CHARACTER FORMATION PROJECT
This week we will read the heart of God’s eternal story of justice for us, His children. Before break, we saw Jesus dead after being unjustly executed. Jesus, however, went willingly to His death as the only perfect sacrifice for our sins. In Matthew 28, we see Jesus risen again, the triumphant Savior.

PHONICS and SPELLING
This week we will read, sort and spell words with the or, ore, and oar spelling sounds and patterns. The test will be on Thursday before Grandparent’s Day festivities.

READING SKILLS and STRATEGIES
This week we will review how "reading is thinking" as we read various poems and discuss their meaning.

GRAMMAR and WRITING
Sometimes writing poetry can be challenging, but these kiddos are up for the challenge. As we continue to use strategies real poets use to write poems, the students will also start making decisions that strengthen the meaning of their poems.

It's been fun to watch the children notice how some "grammar rules" can be be broken with poetry, but they will continue to work on using everything they know to make their sentences or phrases look and sound right.

Week of April 15th

Holy Week...
Teaching children about the events of Holy Week can be a lot harder than teaching them about Christmas with its birth of a special baby, heavenly hosts of angels and wise men bearing gifts coming from afar. Now the baby Jesus is a grown man, cheered by crowds as he enters Jerusalem.  He tells his followers to eat His body and drink His blood.  Then He's arrested and killed in a cruel manner before rising from the dead. Where do we begin? This week I encourage you to get out your bibles, read, and talk with your second graders about the events that led to Jesus' resurrection. When questions arise, answer them honestly. What a great way to remember that Jesus died for us so that we could be together with Him in heaven!

CHRISTIAN CHARACTER FORMATION PROJECT
This week we will read about Jesus' burial and resurrection from Matthew chapters 28 and 29. The virtue we will discuss is JUSTICE. We define justice as God's power for you to do what is right according to His word. The "Big Question" we will ask ourselves is - How does knowing Jesus help you know the right thing to do?

NO SPELLING THIS WEEK. In fact, we will be taking a break from our normal routines as we study from two famous poets, Jack Prelutsky and Shel Silverstein. We'll be reading and writing a lot of poetry this week. Your second graders are really enjoying this unit.

Week of April 8th

Looking forward to another exciting week! Here are our objectives...

CHRISTIAN CHARACTER FORMATION PROJECT
This week we will read about Jesus' crucifixion and death from John chapter 19. The virtue we will discuss is SELF-SACRIFICE. We define self-sacrifice as God's power for you to give up something to help others. The "Big Question" we will ask ourselves is - What makes you want to sacrifice for others?

PHONICS and SPELLING
This week we will read, sort and spell words with the ear, eer, and ere spelling sounds and patterns. There are a lot of homophone choices again this week. If your child's list has these, be sure to help him/her know the difference in meaning.

READING SKILLS and STRATEGIES

I hope your second grader told you about the March Book Madness winner!! We had SO much fun with the "tournament" this year!
Our reading focus will continue to involve exploring nonfiction articles. The students will practice determining the main idea and learn to describe reasons that support their thoughts.

GRAMMAR and WRITING
Who knew poetry could be so fun? Last week we dove into the question, "What is poetry?" by reading and sharing lots of different poems. This week, the kiddos will look at life "through the eyes of a poet" and start writing their own poetry!

Don't forget to mark your calendars for our "Writing Celebration" on May 8th, which is just after our class chapel. This is a big event you won't want to miss!
