Week of March 26th

Welcome back! I hope you all had a wonderful break! Micah, Malorie, and I enjoyed some time away, and now we feel rejuvenated to finish the year STRONG!!
Here's what's in store for this short "Holy Week"...

CHRISTIAN CHARACTER FORMATION PROJECT
This week we will read about Jesus crucifixion and burial from Matthew and discuss the virtue JUSTICE. We define justice as God's power for you to do what is right according to His word. As we study this, we'll ask ourselves this "Big Question", How does knowing Jesus also help you to know the right thing to do?

PHONICS and SPELLING
This week we will read, sort and spell words ending with the /j/ sound using the -ge and -dge spelling patterns. Although this is a short week, we will still have a spelling test on Thursday.

READING SKILLS and STRATEGIES
For the next few weeks we will be learning how to determine the "main idea" of a text. The main idea is the most important part of the story and helps the reader understand what the story is mainly about. This can be a tricky skill. I encourage you to ask your second grader main idea questions during their reading time at home as well.

ALSO... be sure to ask your second grader which March Book Madness Books are left!! We're down to the FINAL FOUR!

GRAMMAR and WRITING
We're going to have fun with grammar and writing this week! Students will be practicing parts of speech with Mad Libs, and applying their knowledge of story elements with a little "free writing time." Stay tuned for a Seesaw post this week!

Week of March 12th

WOW! It's the 4th Quarter and that is VERY hard to believe! I'm so proud of all the learning and growing that has been done this year! Let's push through one full week until we all get a well deserved Spring Break!

Here's what's in store for the week...

CHRISTIAN CHARACTER FORMATION PROJECT

PHONICS and SPELLING
Most consonants behave themselves, each making their own ONE sound. This week we will read, sort, and spell words with consonants that break that rule. These are called hard-c and soft-c, and hard-g and soft-g.

READING SKILLS and STRATEGIES
This week your second grader will practice fluency, text-based evidence comprehension questions, and written responses that encourage thinking beyond the text.

Also, I hope you heard about the first round of voting for March Book Madness! We will find out the results on Wednesday, and vote from the elite eight that day!

WRITING and GRAMMAR
We will continue to work on persuasive writing this week, with the addition of writing book reviews to persuade others to read books we love. We are always working on grammar while writing, but we'll be focusing on contractions again this week.

Week of March 5th

Last week was GREAT!
It was so nice to be back to a normal five day week, but we sure kept busy!!
This Friday marks the end of the 3rd Quarter. Wow!
I can't believe how quickly this year is passing. I'm LOVING every minute of it!

I hope you heard or saw on SeeSaw our first attempt at persuasive writing with Dr. Seuss...

Here's what's in store for this week...

CHRISTIAN CHARACTER FORMATION PROJECT
Our story this week comes from Mark 12:41-44. We'll read about how Jesus notices a widow's giving, and we'll discuss the virtue Self-Sacrifice. We define Self-Sacrifice as God's power for you to give something up to help others. As we explore this, we'll ask ourselves "How can you give, even when you don't have enough?"

PHONICS and SPELLING
We'll be reading, sorting and spelling words with silent letters. For example, the kn, gn, mb, and wr letter combinations all have silent letters... some of these words can be tricky!

I also wanted to send out a special congratulations to our very own Second Grade Spelling Champion, Joshua Fabbiono, and all the other spellers and artists that were entered in the LHSS Academic Fair  last weekend. CCLS was represented well!

READING SKILLS and STRATEGIES
We'll be finishing up or last few March Book Madness books by Tuesday, because Wednesday is the first round of voting. The kiddos are SUPER excited and have already formed some strong opinions! As we read, we're having great discussions about the book's characters. We're also finding that the authors are trying to instill good life lessons through the characters in their books. Be sure to ask your second grader about their favorites.

GRAMMAR and WRITING
Things are getting interesting! This week students will focus on adding reasons and examples to their persuasive writing pieces, and also come up with an introduction that can "hook" a reader.
